Packing Instructions

Compactable Solid Radioactive Waste

Compactable dry waste is considered to be any material that can be reduced in volume by mechanical compaction. This includes but is not limited to: paper, plastic, cloth, empty containers, etc.

LOADING

  • Remove drum lid.
  • Line the drum with a 4-6 mil poly drum liner.
  • Place solid waste material in the drum liner.
  • When drum is full, fold over the top of the liner and tape closed.
  • Check to assure the gasket is in the drum lid groove.
  • Replace the drum cover. (Assure gasket stays in place.)
  • Replace the closure ring and tighten bolt in place, be sure to properly torque the bolt.

SHIPPING

  • Monitor the drum.
  • Place applicable shipping labels on drum, mark as required.
  • Properly mark to identify the specific drum, contents, generator name and attach packing list.
  • If Customer is shipping drum(s) back to NSSI:
    1. Call (713)641-0391 and notify NSSI prior to shipment (Collect calls are not accepted).
    2. Sign and fax: (713) 641-6153 or e-mail a copy of the completed Radioactive Waste manifest form and supporting documentation. NSSI, 5711 Etheridge Street Houston, TX 77087
    3. Load the waste onto the transport vehicle and ship to: NSSI, 5711 Etheridge Street, Houston, Texas 77087 Have the transporter sign the manifest. Detach and retain the generator copy for your records.
  • If the waste is to be picked up by NSSI:
    1. Call (713)641-0391 (Collect calls are not accepted) and schedule a pickup date.
    2. Complete the Radioactive Waste Manifest Form prior to the pickup date. No waste will be picked up unless the manifest is completed and signed.
    3. At the time of pickup, the driver will sign the manifest and leave the generator copy with the customer.

Non-Compactable Solid Radioactive Waste

Non-compactable dry waste is considered to be any material that cannot be reduced in volume by mechanical compaction. This includes but is not limited to: rocks, soil, ash, wood, metal, etc.

LOADING

  • Remove drum lid.
  • Line the drum with a 4-6 mil poly drum liner.
  • Place solid waste material in the drum liner.
  • When drum is full, fold over the top of the liner and tape closed.
  • Check to assure the gasket is in the drum lid groove.
  • Replace the drum cover. (Assure gasket stays in place.)
  • Replace the closure ring and tighten bolt in place.

SHIPPING

  • Monitor the drum.
  • Place applicable shipping labels on drum, and mark as required.
  • Properly mark to identify the specific drum, contents, and generator.
  • If Customer is shipping drum(s) back to NSSI:

Compacted Solid Radioactive Waste

Compacted Waste is considered to be waste that has been compacted by any mechanical means and includes waste compacted in-home trash mashers and industrial compactor units. Drums with gross weight in excess of 175 pounds will be considered compacted.

  • Remove drum lid.
  • Line the drum with a 4-6 mil poly drum liner.
  • Place solid waste material in the drum liner
  • When drum is full, fold over the top of the liner and tape closed.
  • Check to assure the gasket is in the drum lid groove.
  • Replace the drum cover. (Assure gasket stays in place.)
  • Replace the closure ring and tighten bolt in place. Be sure to properly torque the bolt to the manufacturers specifications.

SHIPPING

  • Place applicable shipping labels on drum, and mark as required
  • Properly mark to identify the specific drum, contents, and generator.
  • If Customer is shipping drum(s) back to NSSI:

RADIOACTIVE ANIMAL CARCASSES FOR INCINERATION/DIGESTION

LOADING

  • Remove drum lid from outer drum.
  • Remove drum lid from inner drum
  • Remove poly bag, labels, and lime/absorbent mixture.
  • Line the 30-gallon drum with the poly bag provided
  • Place the animal carcasses into the 30-gallon drum in layers using the lime/absorbent mixture provided in between each layer of animal carcasses. (3" lime/absorbent, 6" animal, 3" lime/absorbent, etc.)
  • . Fill the remaining void of inner drum with the remainder of the lime/absorbent mixture provided.
  • Close the poly bag liner, removing the entrapped air as applicable. Twist the liner top, and secure with tape
  • Secure the lid on the inner drum with the ring and bolt. (Make sure gasket is in place before tightening the bolt).
  • Place the inner 30-gallon drum inside the outer 55-gallon drum.
  • Check to assure gasket is in outer drum lid groove.
  • . Replace the outer drum cover. (Assure gasket stays in place).
  • Replace the closure ring and tighten bolt in place.

SHIPPING

  • Monitor the drum.
  • Place applicable shipping labels on drum, and mark as required.
  • Properly mark to identify the specific drum, contents, and generator.
  • If Customer is shipping drum(s) back to NSSI:

L.S.A. SCINTILLATION LIQUIDS IN VIALS

LOADING

  • Remove 55-gallon drum lid.
  • Remove large poly bag and labels
  • NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE ABSORBENT MATERIAL IN POLYBAG IN BOTTOM OF DRUM.
  • Line the inner drum with poly bay provided.
  • Place vials inside the ploy liner.
    NOTE: DO NOT PLACE OTHER RADIOACTIVE WASTE (LE., PAPER TOWELS, VIAL TRAYS, METAL OBJECTS, ETC.) IN DRUM.
    DO NOT ADD ABSORBENT TO THE VIALS IN THE DRUM
  • . When drum is full, fold over the top of the liner and tape closed.
  • Replace the drum cover. (Assure gasket stays in place).
  • Replace the closure ring and tighten bolt in place.
