For over 25 years, Nuclear Sources & Services, Inc. (NSSI) has been at the forefront of tritium research and recovery, supporting government, education, fusion power generation, and aerospace sectors. As one of only three facilities in the U.S. permitted as an RCRA Part B hazardous waste TSDF for tritium waste, we provide industry-leading storage, treatment, and recycling solutions for mixed hazardous waste.

Acceptable Tritiated Waste Streams and Capabilities

Our robust and scalable laboratory is equipped to manage a wide range of tritiated waste streams, including the treatment of various RCRA-coded waste. We offer the most effective alternative to ground disposal.

We Manage:

  • Mixed Waste: Organic liquids, aqueous liquids, organic gases, flammable gases

  • Metals: Mercury, gallium, titanium foils, scandium, nickel, saline hydrides, tritium ECDs

  • Capture Beds: Driers, uranium getter, zircon-iron getter, carbon/molecular sieve traps

  • Water: Light (H₂O) and heavy water (D₂O)

Our Process

  1. Metal Handling System – Decontaminates all metals and stabilizes hydride formers.

  2. Bed Unloading Glovebox – Achieves 99.99% capture, processes driers and hydride formers.

  3. Mixed Waste Combustion Unit – Destroys all EPA codes with up to 99.999% efficiency and captures 99.999% of tritium.

  4. Electrolyzer – Produces up to 7 m³/day of hydrogen, with 99.9% capture from oxygen streams; concentrates LPCE and processes tritium activity up to 10 Ci/kg.

  5. Isotopic Separation – Enriches to 5% tritium gas, prepares gas for recycle, and processes raffinate to ≤1 μCi/m³.

Why Tritium Matters

By recycling tritium to research labs or the market, NSSI minimizes environmental risk, supports critical industries, and advances innovation in clean energy and aerospace technology. Our operations are safe, compliant, and driven by decades of expertise in radiological and hazardous waste management.
