NSSI is permitted for the acceptance of wastes containing both radioactive and hazardous constituents referred to as mixed wastes. Mixed wastes are treated at the NSSI facility to separate the radionuclide from the hazardous component or to treat the hazardous component so that the waste is no longer hazardous. Such separation or destruction, in most cases, will allow the individual components to be disposed as radioactive waste or hazardous wastes at offsite facilities permitted for final disposal.
